Loft mattress linens are included for Corral Lofts and Canyon Lofts. Fridge sizes and kitchen equipment vary, so check your cabin style before planning what to bring for meals.

A coastal chronology

A brief history
of El Capitán.

  1. About3,200years ago

    A village beside the creek

    Chumash residents of Ahwin built domed houses beside the creek. Plank-built tomol canoes carried them to the offshore islands.

  2. The rancho years

    José Dolores Ortega received an 8,800-acre Mexican land grant. His family raised cattle and farmed Rancho Cañada del Corral, including today’s beach.

  3. A change of hands

    Years of severe drought forced the Ortega family to sell the rancho.

  4. El Capitán becomes a state beach

    California purchased 111 acres of the former rancho. Another 21 acres were approved for purchase in 1967.

  5. The Canyon campground opens

    El Capitan Canyon began as a private campground on 300 acres across Highway 101 from the state beach.

  6. From shoreline to foothills

    The addition of 2,500 acres at El Capitán Ranch extended the state park inland.

When does family booking open?

Family booking opens December 1, 2026 for our March 12–14, 2027 weekend. Committee reservations happen first, so the cabins and styles offered will depend on what remains. The opening time, reservation instructions, and costs will be shared here. Add booking day to your calendar.

Where are we staying?

Camp Robin is at El Capitan Canyon, March 12–14, 2027, at 11560 Calle Real, Santa Barbara. Our planned group block is in Upper Meadow and adjoining accommodations. Compare the seven cabin styles or see the cabin map. The full block includes committee reservations; the map and guides do not show remaining availability. Reservation instructions will be shared when announced.

What should we bring?

Start with our March weekend packing checklist: layers, walking shoes, a flashlight, and everyday family essentials. Check your cabin guide for included amenities. Meal arrangements and the committee’s final packing guidance are still coming.
